A woman from East Yorkshire, battling two types of cancer, commemorates a milestone birthday by participating in a run.

Allyson Kent, who will be celebrating her 60th birthday this weekend, serves as an ambassador for 5K Your Way, an initiative that supports individuals with cancer in maintaining an active lifestyle.

Allyson Kent, a cancer patient from Beverley, recently celebrated a significant milestone birthday by participating in a 5k run. Despite battling two forms of cancer, she successfully completed the run, demonstrating her determination and resilience.

Allyson Kent is also an ambassador for 5K Your Way, an initiative that supports individuals with cancer in staying physically active. Through her participation in the event, she not only celebrated her birthday but also raised awareness about the importance of exercise for both physical and mental well-being, particularly for those living with cancer.

Despite the scorching temperatures, Allyson Kent successfully completed a 5k (3.1-mile) Parkrun at Beverley Westwood on Saturday.

Afterward, expressing her joy, Ms. Kent, who walked 1,000 miles (1,609 km) in 2021, exclaimed, “I feel incredibly elated.”

Allyson Kent also shared her experience of the run, acknowledging the difficulties posed by the scorching temperatures. She mentioned that managing hot flushes alongside the heat was a challenge but emphasized the significance of approaching things in one’s own unique way. This mindset serves as her source of motivation to overcome obstacles and stay determined in her journey.

“Exercise holds great significance for me. It contributes to both my physical and mental well-being, although it can be challenging at times.”

Ms. Kent, a retired nurse residing near Beverley, received a breast cancer diagnosis in 2019, and the subsequent year, she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer.

“You are an individual who happens to have a diagnosis,” she emphasized.

“When living with cancer, it’s crucial to concentrate on what you are capable of, and for me, participating in 5K Your Way is one such achievement, thanks to the incredible support from everyone at Beverley Westwood Parkrun.”

Ms. Kent provided clarification that 5K Your Way is a nationwide initiative that has been running for five years, involving diverse groups located throughout the country.

The MOVE charity, established in 2016 by international athlete Gemma Hillier-Moses, manages the initiative. Its primary objective is to provide assistance to individuals with cancer. As stated on its website, Ms. Hillier-Moses herself was diagnosed with cancer at the age of 24.
